Differentiation and taxonomy of the Rock Lizards Darevskia (Saxicola) (Sauria: Lacertidae) according to morphological and molecular analyses

Abstract: The results of statistical analysis of morphological characters and the study of the cytochrome b gene variability (mtDNA) of rock lizards of the Darevskia (saxicola) complex distributed in the Caucasus and the Crimea, have shown significant differentiation within this complex, assuming specific independence of D. szczerbaki (Lukina, 1963) and subspecific status of recently described D. brauneri myusserica Doronin, 2011. According to our data, within D. brauneri (Mehely, 1909) only two forms of subspecific sta… Show more

“…Species were identifi ed according to the literature (Bannikov et al, 1977;Kuzmin, 2012) published morphological keys and remarkable features, and using resources available online (https://www.lacerta.de/AS/Home.php). Additionally, for identifi cation of rock lizards from Darevskia complex literature resources highlighting key distinguishing features of folidosis and general morphology were used (Eiselt, Darevsky, 1991;Doronin et al, 2013;Doronin, 2017). Identifi cation of morphological anomalies was made following the work of V. Vershinin (Vershinin, 2015).…”

“…Надвидовой комплекс Darevskia (caucasica) в настоящее время включает 4 таксона видового и подвидового ранга: D. alpina (Darevsky, 1967), D. caucasica caucasica (Méhely, 1909), D. c. vedeni ca (Darevsky et Roitberg, 1999 и D. daghestanica (Darevsky, 1967); комплекс Darevskia (saxicola) -6 такcонов: D. arribasi Tuniyev, Petrova et Lotiev, 2023, D. brauneri brauneri (Méhely, 1909, D. b. my usserica Doronin, 2011, D. lindholmi (Szczerbak, 1962, D. saxicola (Eversmann, 1834) и D. szczerbaki (Lukina, 1963) (Доронин и др. [Doronin et al] 2013[Doronin et al] , 2021Tuniyev et al 2023). Оба комплекса недостаточно изучены в систематическом плане и могут быть признаны проблемными группами -в том числе по причине межвидовой гибридизации (Tarkhnishvili et al 2016;Tarkhnishvili and Iankoshvili 2023).…”
