Differentiating bipolar disorder in Turkish prepubertal children with attention‐deficit hyperactivity disorder

Abstract: We conclude that ADHD + BPD in Turkish children represents a clinical picture different to that of ADHD alone, in which the clinical characteristics resemble those of children reported in the literature. Further long-term follow-up studies are needed in larger clinical and community samples.

“…A Brazilian sample ascertained from a chart review of patients under 15 found that those CBCL subscales that showed differences between those diagnosed with JBD and those diagnosed with ADHD were the Anxious/Depressed, Delinquent Problems, and Aggressive Behavior subscales (Tramontina et al, 2003). Diler and colleagues (2007) found that their ADHD+JBD group was different from an ADHD group on the Anxious/Depressed, Social Problems, Thought Problems, and Aggression subscales. Thus, although elevations on the CBCL are common findings in JBD research, the specificity is questionable.…”

“…Examining the course of BD, adults with ''BD ? ADHD'' were characterized by an earlier age of disease onset (compared to ''BD-ADHD''), a more severe course of disorder with shorter periods of well-being, a higher number of affective episodes, and higher comorbidity rates with other psychiatric disorders (Nierenberg et al 2005;Tamam et al 2006;Wingo and Ghaemi 2007;Diler et al 2007;Rydén et al 2009;Bernardi et al 2010).…”

“…Biederman and colleagues (Biederman et al , 1996Faraone et al 2005) reported that youngsters who were diagnosed with bipolar disorder (using a semi-structured diagnostic interview) had clinically significant elevations (T-scores [ 70) on the following CBCL subscales: Aggression, Attention Problems, and Anxious/Depressed. This profile has been replicated by other investigators (e.g., Carlson and Kelly 1998;Diler et al 2007;Giles et al 2007;Hazell et al 1999) and meta-analysis showed that this profile differentiated between youngsters diagnosed with bipolar disorder and those with ADHD (Mick et al 2003).…”
