Differential temporal control of Foxa.a and Zic-r.b specifies brain versus notochord fate in the ascidian embryo

Abstract: In embryos of an invertebrate chordate, Ciona intestinalis, two transcription factors, Foxa.a and Zic-r.b, are required for specification of the brain and the notochord, which are derived from distinct cell lineages. In the brain lineage, Foxa.a and Zic-r.b are expressed with no temporal overlap. In the notochord lineage, Foxa.a and Zic-r.b are expressed simultaneously. In the present study, we found that the temporally non-overlapping expression of Foxa.a and Zic-r.b in the brain lineage was regulated by thre… Show more

“…We have previously demonstrated that transcriptional repressors Hes.a and Prdm1-r.a/b delay the onset of the specification program of the brain, and that this delay enables Foxc to be expressed in the ANB 8,45 . If this is indeed involved in emergence of the ANB in the common ancestor of ascidians and vertebrates, Foxg may subsequently be recruited as a downstream factor of Foxc as a specifier for the ANB.…”

“…The DM domain (PF00751 ‐ DNA binding domain) and the related Pfam DMA (PF03474) are essential for the development of anterior neural plate derivatives in tunicates (Tresser et al, ). Forkhead (PF00250) is involved in the specification of neural tissue during ascidian development (Ikeda & Satou, ). Vasohibin (PF14822) belongs to a protein acting as a negative feedback regulator of angiogenesis (Watanabe et al, ).…”
