Differential Response of a Virginia Common Lambsquarters (Chenopodium Album) Collection to Glyphosate

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to evaluate a common lambsquarters (Chenopodium album) collection from Westmoreland County, Virginia, which exhibited a differential response to glyphosate treatments as compared to most other common lambsquarters.Plants from this site that survived glyphosate applications were collected in both 2002 and 2004. Greenhouse studies were conducted on F1, F2, and F3 progeny from this collection and compared to a wild type collection from Montgomery County, Virginia.Evaluations were … Show more

“…Recently in New Zealand, synthetic auxin resistance has been confirmed in populations of C. album (Ghanizadeh andHarrington 2017, Rahman et al 2014). Glyphosate resistance has yet to be confirmed however, C. album is known to have natural tolerance to glyphosate (Hite et al 2008, Kniss et al 2007, Yerka et al 2013.…”

“…Two of these glyphosate resistant weed species have already Dow AgroSciences LLC become a significant problem for farmers across a large geographic area: Conyza canadensis (Horseweed) infests at least two million hectares of glyphosate tolerant crops in the U.S.; and Amaranthus palmeri (Palmer amaranth) has heavily impacted cotton growers, particularly in the Southeast. In addition, researchers in Virginia have been testing a biotype of common lambsquarters that survived 1.0 lb ae/acre (1120 g ae/ha) glyphosate, and thus appears to have low level resistance to glyphosate (Hite et al, 2008). Weed scientists in Ohio and Indiana have also identified a biotype of common lambsquarters in at least a dozen fields that appears to have low-level glyphosate resistance (Curran et al, 2007).…”
