An der Entstehung von Hautkrebs ist sowohl die mittelwellige UVB-Strahlung (290-315 nm) als auch die langwellige UVA-Strahlung (315-400 nm) beteiligt [1]. Über die der UVA-induzierten Photokarzinogenese zugrunde liegenden Mechanismen liegen erst wenige Informationen vor. Zudem hat der Schutz vor UVA-Strahlung erst in den letzten Jahren das Interesse der kosmetischen Industrie gefunden mit der Folge, dass erst seit einiger Zeit hochwirksame UVA-Filter zur Verfügung stehen. Die Beurteilung der Wirksamkeit einer Photoprotektion im UVA-Bereich unter besonderer Berück-sichtigung der Verhinderung der Hautkrebsentstehung wird zudem durch die Tatsache erschwert, dass es für die UVAProtektion im Gegensatz zur UVB-Protektion zz. keine gesetzlich verbindlichen Normen gibt. Aus diesen Gründen kann die oben genannte Frage zz. nur für die UVB-induzierte Photokarzinogenese beantwortet werden. Die Fähigkeit eines Sonnenschutzmittels, gegen die schädlichen Wirkungen der UVB-Bestrahlung zu schützen, wird als die Fähigkeit eines gegebenen Präparates gemessen, das durch eine Bestrahlung mit einem der COLIPA-Norm entsprechendem Solarsimulator hervorgerufene Erythem zu verhindern.Als Index für die Leistungsfähigkeit eines Sonnenschutzmittel dient demnach der Lichtschutzfaktor (LSF).Aus dermatologischer Sicht vorteilhaft an dieser Methode ist, dass der Lichtschutzfaktor in vivo ermittelt wird und somit Unterschiede in den Hauttypen nach Fitzpatrick mit berücksichtigt werden. Es muss heute davon ausgegangen werden, dass mindestens 2 Mechanismen zusammenwirken, damit es zur Entwicklung von klinisch erkennbarem Hautkrebs kommt [1]. Zum einen ist eine dauerhafte Schädigung der Erbsubstanz, d. h. das Auftreten von Mutationen, erforderlich. Zum Zweiten ist es notwendig, dass UVB-Strahlung die Überwachungsfunktion des Hautimmunsystems gegenüber neoplastisch veränderten Hautzellen unterdrückt, d. h., es kommt zum Auftreten einer durch UVB-Strahlung hervorgerufenen Immunsuppression [2].
