Differential prediction of a specific behavior from three projective techniques.

Abstract: A comparative study of tuberculosis patients using three projective tests, the Rorschach, the TAT, and the H-T-P " . . . would support the authors' basic hypothesis that accurate prediction of specific overt behavior from projective techniques is dependent upon the extent to which the test provides a measure of the interaction between needs of the individual and a symbolization of the external factors of the situation in which the behavior occurs."

“…Three studies dealt with the prediction of termination in a tuberculosis hospital. Vernier, Whiting, and Meltzer (1955) were able to differentiate patients who left the hospital against medical advice from those who continued treatment to the end, using the Rorschach and H-T-P tests. The TAT did not discriminate.…”

“…The H-T-P protocols of two samples of patients who had obtained either MHB discharges or AMA discharges were analyzed in an effort to cross-validate the findings of an earlier study (Vernier, et al, 1955). None of the seven signs of the original study which were reported to differ significantly between the groups was found to hold up in the crossvalidation.…”

“…Certain behaviors can be predicted in tuberculosis patients. Discharge against medical advice can be predicted from demographic data (Moran, Fainvcather, Morton, & McGaughran, 1955) and from projective techniques ( 'Calden, Thurston, Lewis, & Lorenz, 1956;Vernier, Whiting, & Melser, 1955). Behaviors within the hospital can be predicted from a sentence completion test specifically designed for tuberculosis patients (Calden, 1953;Thurston, Lorenz, & Calden, Z0T-C-68) and from questionnaires I Moran et al, 1955: Pauleen, 1955.…”
