Differential impacts of social support on mental health: A comparison study of Chinese rural-to-urban migrant adolescents and their urban counterparts in Beijing, China

Abstract: The findings contribute to understanding of the mental health status of migrant adolescents in China and the differential impact of the various sources of social support on migrant and urban-born adolescents. Also the findings may inform the development of mental health services and programmes that can potentially benefit a large number of internal migrant adolescents in China.

“…Current studies on the effects of living arrangements on health mainly focus on children with divorced parents, or who are orphaned, children of political refugees, disabled children, and children in boarding schools [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 , 14 , 15 ]. Studies on migrant students mainly focus on the children who are left behind and/or comparisons with local children [ 16 , 17 , 18 ]. Migration is generally considered to have significant positive effects on migrant children’s material conditions, with no negative effects on their mental health [ 1 ].…”

“…Family support and leisure activities are two important protective factors at the microsystem level. As the most proximal unit where people are directly involved, a family unit and its members are important agents for enhancing resilience in people of different ages and at different stage of developments [ 27 , 28 ]. When facing adversities, the family unit can potentially provide resources, such as guidance, reassurance, attachment, and integration, through sharing of common beliefs and providing relational and structural support [ 29 ].…”

“…Generalization of our results may be challenging due to rural nature of the JS Cohort. A previous study conducted in China suggested that urban-born adolescents had better mental health and received higher social support [38], but the opposite was true in a Korean study [39]. Although the associations between urbanicity and psychosocial factors should be further investigated, the health effects of discrimination and social support might vary by urbanicity.…”
