Differential gene expression in Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans LR planktonic and attached cells in the presence of chalcopyrite

Abstract: Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans is commonly used in bioleaching operations to recover copper from sulfide ores. It is commonly accepted that A. ferrooxidans attaches to mineral surfaces by means of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), however the role of type IV pili and tight adherence genes in this process is poorly understood. Genes related to the formation of type IV pili and tight adherence were identified in the genome of the bacterium, and in this work, we show that A. ferrooxidans actively expresse… Show more

“…Although the concerning link between biofilm formation and increased antibiotic tolerance has been known for some time, , only recently have the benefits of some surface-attached communities become appreciated. Such beneficial roles include competitively excluding pathogen colonization, bioelectricity generation, and enhancing bioleaching. , Furthermore, recent microbiome research cataloging various beneficial relationships between bacterial biofilms and their human host has caused a paradigm shift from the desire to inhibit biofilm formation toward also designing biofilms for therapeutic purposes . One goal of synthetic biology is to program bacterial cell surfaces to perform customized functions under an exclusive set of environmental conditions such as binding a defined surface or remediating a toxic metal from an environment.…”

“…Estas proteínas estão relacionadas com a biossíntese da pilina tipo IV, a qual está envolvida com vários processos, tais como, mobilidade, sinalização e comunicação celular, além de transferência genética, entre outras (Craig et al, 2004;Ossa Henao et al, 2014). PilT é descrita como uma proteína relacionada à troca dos pili da bactéria, processo necessário para sua retração (Alm & Mattick, 1995;Mattick, 2002).…”
