“…The development of a globular structure in somatic embryogenesis is coupled to the concomitant development of the protodermis, the outermost layer of a developing embryo with evident anticlinal divisions and the presence of this layer is one of the characteristic features of somatic embryo development (Yeung 1995;von Arnold et al 2002). It has been proposed that the protodermis regulates further embryo development by applying physical and cell divisional limitations (Quiroz-Figueroa et al 2002). Interestingly, the protodermis was clearly visible in histological section at initial stages of somatic embryogenesis of saffron indicating that the emerging meristemoids were following the normal path of somatic embryos.…”
