Differential expression of snoRNAs in oral squamous cell carcinomas: new potential diagnostic markers

Abstract: Background: Small nucleolar RNAs (snoRNAs) are small non-coding RNA sequences whose most studied function is ribosome biogenesis. The altered expression of snoRNA is observed in tumoral processes such as breast cancer and multiple myeloma. However, we have not found any references to snoRNAs in oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCC) in the literature at the time this article was written.Material and methods: We have analyzed snoRNA expression in frozen OSCC tissue samples and have compared them to healthy contro… Show more

“…They ascribed the heterogeneity among studies to differences in study design, sample size, sample type, and origin or population (15). Other recent meta-analyses of OSCC and miRNAs have been conducted by Zahra et al, Zeljic et al, and Troiano et al, which showed some correspondence and some differences in results (7,12,16). Authors conclude that a possible bias in meta-analysis is the origin of the samples.…”

“…OSCC prognosis can differ among ethnic groups, as carcinogenic patterns are different, for example, the mutation rates of TP53 are significantly lower in Asian patients than in Caucasian patients (12).…”

“…We first identified several snoRNAs that were correlated with the clinical outcomes of BLCA. Given the stable nature of snoRNAs in the human body, these snoRNAs have inherent advantages for use as molecular biomarkers [ 25 27 ]. Regrettably, few studies have assessed snoRNAs as diagnostic and prognostic tools for BLCA.…”

“…The microarray comparison made between OSCC tissue and keratinized gums, proved that 14 snoRNAs were down-regulated (displayed in Figure 3 ) and one snoRNA was up-regulated in OSCC. An accentuated down-regulation of mgh18S-121 and ACA17 can be the cause of a worse prognostic [ 123 ].…”
