Differential electrolytic potentiometric titration method for the determination of ciprofloxacin in drug formulations

“…Three formulations, two coming from Syria (formulations 5 and 6) and one from India (formulation 8), have lower ciprofloxacin amounts: 92.8 ± 1.1%, 90.2 ± 3.3%, 91.0 ± 1.9% of advertised concentrations, respectively, whereas the formulation from Romania (formulation 14) shows a higher concentration (107.3 ± 3.2%). These data are in agreement with those reported by several authors who, for the validation of various analytical techniques, assayed ciprofloxacin in pharmaceutical formulations (tablets, capsules, injection, eye-drops) from different countries (Czech Republic, Austria, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Spain, China, India, and unknown) and found contents comprised between 94% and 107% of declared amount of ciprofloxacin [6,7,[12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. However, our results differ from those of Weir et al [20] who analyzed the content of 30 Indian generic ciprofloxacin eye drops by HPLC with fluorescence detection and found a great variability.…”
