Differential Effects of Nano TiO2 and CeO2 on Normal Human Lung Epithelial Cells In Vitro

Abstract: Nano-TiO2 and nano-CeO2 are among the most widely used engineered nanoparticles (NPs). We investigated a variety of endpoints to assess the toxicity of eight of these NPs to induce potentially adverse health effects in an In Vitro human respiratory epithelial cell model. These endpoints include cytotoxicity, reactive oxygen species (ROS)/reactive nitrogen species (RNS) production, 8-hydroxy-2_-deoxyguanosine (8-oxo-dG), endogenous DN… Show more

“…In this regard, Ahmadzadeh et al (2017) have justified this phenomenon as follows; with the decrease of the nanoparticle sizes and increase in the ratio of their surface area to volume, their chemical and biological reactivity rises. This conduces to increased production of ROS beyond the tolerance of biological systems to eliminate or reduce their harmful effects (Thai et al, 2019).…”

“…Results of this research have been published in various scientific journals over the past ten years. [9][10][11][12][13][14] The relational database NaKnowBase (NKB) was developed by ORD to take the results of this research and connect the physical and chemical characteristics of the ENMs studied with any adverse effects encountered. 15 An article was recently published announcing the official release of NKB.…”

“…The targeted variable in this paper is the viability of cell cultures after being exposed in vitro to different forms and concentrations of ENMs for different periods of time and under different laboratory conditions. However, the results of many more USEPA/ORD peer-reviewed studies [9][10][11][12][13][14] of types in vitro, in vivo, life cycle and more have been curated into NKB for future examinations.…”

“…Recently, a wave of research about cerium oxide nanoparticles has been set off in the medical field [16][17][18][19]. Owing to its small diameter and large surface volume ratio, CeO 2 nanoparticles which can scavenge free radicals have attracted increasing attention [20][21][22][23][24]. CeO 2 nanoparticles effectively remove ROS by simulating the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), which are derived from the redox exchange between Ce 3+ and Ce 4+ [25].…”
