Differential cytology of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in normal children

Abstract: We have studied the differential cytology of BAL fluid in 48 children aged 3-16 years (mean age±SD 7.9±3.5 yrs) undergoing elective surgery for nonpulmonary illnesses. A flexible bronchoscope (Pentax 3.5 or 4.9 mm) was wedged in the middle lobe or one of its segments. BAL was performed with 3×1 ml·kg -1 body weight of normal saline warmed to body temperature. The first sample was studied separately; subsequent samples were pooled for analysis. The mean recovery was 58±15%. Significantly more granulocytes and le… Show more

“…The other possibility is to inject cells into a flow cytometre. The results of both technique yield similar results [19,33,37,38,39]. If cytospins are used, a minimum of 300±500 cells should be counted [35].…”

“…To improve comparison between centres the total volume instilled, the number of specimens, their volume and the percentage of recovery should be reported. Total cell counts are variable even in healthy children but should be included [19,33,34]. The percentage of individual cell population is the preferable method for data analysis.…”

“…Children have higher percentages of lymphocytes in BALF than adult humans, which may reflect infection with respiratory viruses (Ratjen et al, 1994). Acute respiratory viral infections also occur with high frequency in young dogs, especially those that are unvaccinated (Buonavoglia and Martella, 2007).…”
