Different Power Settings of LLLT on the Repair of the Calcaneal Tendon

Abstract: Low-level laser therapy resulted in significantly greater amounts of type III collagen (output powers of 60 mW or more) and type I collagen (output power of 80 mW), however, no significant differences between groups were found in the realignment of collagen fibers.

“…Group C: rats subjected to surgical procedures without tendon lesion and hAM application simulation; Group I: animals subjected to surgical procedures, including tendon injury, and hAM application simulation; and Group T: animals subjected to surgical procedures, including tendon injury, and hAM application. The tendon injury was induced by direct trauma in animals of groups I and T using a mini guillotine (Physiology Laboratory at the University of Paraíba Valley), according to the protocol used by Neves et al 14 . The sample size of 5 subjects per group was validated by calculating the power (beta), obtaining values of 0.86 for the inflammatory cell counts and 0.99 for fibroblast count.…”

“…It is important to note that this study utilized a constant power output and power density and only altered the time of treatment in order to study different energy density effects. It is unclear if a constant time with variable power density would have had the same outcome, as previous studies have shown that altering the power density can have significant biological effects . It is clear that both parameters are likely to have marked impact on outcome.…”

“…Wood et al also found that ultrasound, LLLT, and the combined use of LLLT and ultrasound resulted in greater synthesis of type I collagen (but not type III collagen) [25]. Moreover, different power settings of low-level laser treatment might also contribute to the significantly differential expressions of type I and type III collagen [26]. Thus, we believed, under certain settings of laser parameters, low-level laser could predominantly affect the synthesis of type I collagen from tenocytes.…”
