“…The molecular methods most frequently used include restriction analysis of both plasmids (Nesbakken et al, 1987;Kapperund et al, 1990) and chromosomes (Blumberg et al, 1991), randomly amplified polymorphic DNA analysis (Rasmussen et al, 1994), ribotyping (Andersen & Saunders, 1990;Lobato et al, 1998) and PFGE (Najdenski et al, 1994;Saken et al, 1994;Iteman et al, 1996;Fredriksson-Ahomaa et al, 2004). The enterobacterial repetitive intergenic consensus-PCR (ERIC-PCR) technique has not been used extensively, and its real potential as a tool for typing and in epidemiological studies of Y. enterocolitica has yet to be recognized (Sachdeva & Virdi, 2004;Wojciech et al, 2004).…”

“…This hypothesis is supported by the fact that the area where the dog was rescued was located between a large abattoir for pigs and a conventional market with a large number of butchers. 7 Several studies 4,8,11 have suggested that pork is associated with the transmission of Y. enterocolitica 4:O3 to dogs. In addition, in Korea, Y. enterocolitica O3 has predominantly been isolated from pigs and dogs.…”

“…In Japan, the Y. enterocolitica O:8 strains have been isolated from stream water [9, 65]. Distribution of genotypes of Y. enterocolitica 4/O:3 strains in butcher shops in Munich has been studied with PFGE using NotI, ApaI, and XhoI enzymes [66]. Twelve genotypes were obtained among 33 isolates from 14 pork and two environmental samples, demonstrating that several different strains were distributed in butcher shops.…”

“…Pathogenic Y. enterocolitica can be transmitted from slaughterhouses to meat-processing plants and then to retail level via contaminated pig carcasses and offal [66, 70]. Contaminated pork and offal are important transmission vehicles from retail shops to humans [70].…”
