Different Effects of Iron Indices on Mortality in Patients With Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease After Long-Term Hemodialysis: A Nationwide Population-Based Study

Abstract: Objective: Iron supplementation and erythropoietin stimulating agents (ESAs) are essential for maintaining hemoglobin levels in hemodialysis patients. However, patients with autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (PKD) have higher endogenous erythropoietin levels, so their recommended iron indices for hemodialysis patients may differ. This study evaluated iron profiles, including ferritin levels and transferrin saturation (TSAT) to identify factors affecting mortality in patients on dialysis, and those a… Show more

“…In case of functional ID/anemia, high ferritin levels with a value of > 100–500 or 109–2783 μg/L indicated a higher risk of mortality and cardiovascular hospitalization [ 66 , 67 ]. In contrast, low TSAT values were significantly associated with a higher mortality risk independent of absolute or functional ID/anemia [ 68 , 71 73 ]. In an analysis of approx.…”

“…Furthermore, the long-term toxicity of IV iron treatment is also unknown [2]. In some studies, a high serum ferritin level was associated with increased mortality in hemodialysis patients [3][4][5][6][7]. In these studies, different values were identified for the serum ferritin level that could cause an increase in mortality [3,6,7].…”
