Different Distribution of HIV-1 Subtype and Drug Resistance Were Found among Treatment Naïve Individuals in Henan, Guangxi, and Yunnan Province of China

Abstract: Yunnan, Guangxi and Henan are the provinces with the most severe HIV epidemic in China, which were also among the first group of areas providing free ART in 2004. However, little comprehensive data are available on prevalence of HIV subtype and baseline drug resistance in drug-naïve populations. In this study, 1746 treatment-naïve HIV-positive individuals were randomly selected from new-reported cases in Henan, Guangxi and Yunnan. Among of them, subtypes and drug resistance of 1159 strains were determined by a… Show more

“…Based upon these differences, we may have expected to see a higher rate of bone turnover in the TDF+LPVr group at baseline, however baseline BTM levels measured in our TDF+LPVr cohort fell within the range of baseline CTX and P1NP levels seen in the previously published switch studies, and were not significantly different from the baseline values of BTM in our treatment-naïve cohort. Finally, in this region HIV-1 Subtype B predominates [38], however to our knowledge there have been no studies suggesting that populations infected with different subtypes of HIV-1 demonstrate different bone turnover profiles in response to ART.…”

“…A molecular epidemiology study showed that CRF08_BC was the dominant subtype (59.8%) in Yunnan Province in the newly reported cases. 6 From 2007 to 2010, CRF08_BC accounted for over 40% of HIV-1 infections in Chinese blood donors. 7 In addition to IDUs, this CRF also spread through heterosexual contacts and predominated among heterosexuals in Yunnan Province.…”

“…7 In addition to IDUs, this CRF also spread through heterosexual contacts and predominated among heterosexuals in Yunnan Province. 6 Currently 26 antiretroviral agents using six different mechanisms of action have been licensed for the treatment of HIV infections in adults, half of which target the reverse transcriptase (RT). 8 RT inhibitors (RTIs) include nine nucleoside RTIs (NRTIs) and four nonnucleoside RTIs (NNRTIs).…”

“…The subtype distribution in Guangxi is approximately 75% CRF01AE and 25% B or BC recombinants. [8][9][10] Previous research in Thailand estimated that the FRR was 0% using a cutoff of 1.0 OD-n for 128 samples from CRF01_AE-infected subjects. 4 Additionally, individuals infected with subtype B and C historically have a low FRR.…”
