Different Developmental Strategies in Two Boreal Blow Flies (Diptera: Calliphoridae)

Abstract: The minimum developmental rates of Protophormia terraenovae (Robineau-Desvoidy) and Calliphora vomitoria (L.) were measured at four temperatures: 12.5, 23, 29, and 35 degrees C. Although both species are Holarctic in distribution and hemisynanthropic, there are important differences in the response of their developmental stages to various temperature regimes. The eggs and feeding larvae of P. terraenovae responded linearly to temperatures from 23 to 35 degrees C, but development was retarded at 12.5 degrees C.… Show more

“…For the carcasses with a different quantity of biomass, the larger the carcass the faster is the development. This is because the abundance of larvae is greater, increasing the internal temperature of the carcass, thus accelerating the development of the Diptera (Greenberg 1991;Turner & Howard 1992;Greenberg & Tantawi 1993). In carcasses of less than 1kg, C. albiceps are not commonly found (Moura et al 1997), possibly because they need higher temperatures, and that is why they colonize larger corpses to complete their development.…”

“…Within these studies, some only used a photoperiod of 24:0 (L:D) h for one constant temperature (Byrd and Butler 1996, 1997 and used 12:12 (L:D) h for the remaining ßuctuating temperatures. Still, other studies used constant darkness (Grassberger and Reiter 2002a) or did not report the experimental photoperiod (Greenberg and Tantawi 1993;Anderson 2000;Reiter 2001, 2002b;Grassberger et al 2003;Clarkson et al 2004).…”
