Different characteristics of two surges in Weigeledangxiong Glacier, northeastern Tibetan Plateau

Abstract: Glacier surge is a special form of glacier displacement caused by the instability of the glacial dynamic system. It is a quasi-periodic oscillation behavior, which affects the estimation of the overall change of glaciers in the region and potentially threatens the infrastructure and human life in the downstream regions. Most glaciers experience a mass loss with rising air temperatures in recent decades, but little attention has been paid to the influence of climate change on glacial surges. This study identifi… Show more

“…Hugonnet et al (2021) derived the change rate of glacier surface elevation in 2000−2020 through the interpolation of a continuous elevation time series from multiple co-registered optical DEMs and related dataset [29]. This dataset has been widely employed in glacier mass change research [30][31][32][33]. In this paper, the dataset provided the surface elevation change from 2000 to 2020 of Jiongpu Co glacier and all land-terminating glaciers in the Yigong Zangbo Basin.…”

“…Directly evaluating the results of the offset tracking is challenging, as no in situ measurements of glacier flow velocities are available in the WKL. Through considering the flat (slope < 10 • ) ice-free areas as stable [31], we computed the mean offsets of all image pairs in those regions and regarded them as the uncertainties of each image pair (Figure 2). The two paths' mean uncertainties in glacier surface velocity are 0.011 m d −1 and 0.012 m d −1 , respectively, and indicate the reliability of the velocity data in this study.…”
