Differences of oral health conditions between adults and older adults: A census in a Southern Brazilian city

Abstract: A significant difference of oral conditions between adults and older adults was observed. The frequency of use of and need for dental prostheses was higher for older adults, although they had reported lower frequency of temporomandibular disorder. Women, married and individuals of higher socioeconomic status showed better oral health conditions. Geriatr Gerontol Int 2016; 16: 1014-1020.

“…These results were similar to other investigations that associated older age as a protective factor for TMD 19,22 . With regard to age, it is believed that older people tend to develop better resilience in SS, adapting to the changes resulting from aging 5,41 . Moreover, in the course of the aging process, the elderly, for the most part, tend to conform to the deterioration of their health and, therefore, believe that oral problems are an unavoidable consequence of aging 4,42 .…”

“…In this sense, the World Health Organization (WHO) 1 estimate that Brazil will have the sixth largest population of old people in a short period. Therefore, it is fundamental to observe the peculiarities inherent in this life cycle 2 , since they effectively represent a great socioeconomic impact for the country and a challenge for the managers of public policies [3][4][5] . With the advancement of the aging process, morphophysiological changes occur in the body more rapidly, which increases the predisposition to diseases.…”

“…Ideally, the analysis should be stratified by age group and sex, considering that these variables are not true confounders on the association between Indigeneity and oral health conditions. However, the studied oral health outcomes are strongly influenced by age and sex . Hence, the most appropriate way to acknowledge the potential influence that age and sex might have on the association between Indigeneity and oral health is to include these conditions in the adjusted models.…”

“…Older adults experience greater financial barriers to dental care than for any other type of health service, including prescription drugs and medical care . Consequently, poor oral conditions have been reported among older adults, particularly among the most vulnerable subgroups, such as nursing home residents and those that are homebound …”
