Differences in Young People’s Reports of Sexual Behaviors According to Interview Methodology: A Randomized Trial in India

Abstract: Our results showed that young people were more likely to report sexual behaviors in culturally specific interactive interviews than in face-to-face interviews. By contrast, ACASIs did not uniformly lead to higher reporting levels than did face-to-face interviews.

“…Benefits for patients CAHTS can be used in several clinical settings and are particularly useful in eliciting potentially sensitive information, for example, on alcohol consumption, 29,30 psychiatric care, [31][32][33][34] sexual health 35 and gynaecological health. 36 Using CAHTS before the consultation would also, in principle, allow more time for the patient to discuss their actual health problem rather than routine aspects of medical history with their physician.…”

“…Four found mixed results. 11,13,14,15 In all of these studies, participants completed both ACASI and IAQ but were randomized to which they completed first. For the most part, no strong reporting bias in responses to sexual and drug behavior questions was observed based on assessment methodology in this study of Russians with alcohol and/or drug dependence. There was excellent agreement between responses from ACASI and IAQ for the majority of responses.…”

“…Because only a few randomised controlled trials involving CATHS have been performed so far, it has been speculated that the improvements in the volume and accuracy of the answers seen in studies (34,57,24) may not accurately reflect the intervention. It has been suggested that the effects may be attributed to novelty and performance biases whereby the behaviour of researchers and patients was influenced (24).…”
