Differences in plasma TIMP-1 levels between healthy people and patients with rectal cancer stage II or III

Abstract: BackgroundThe purpose of the study was to analyse whether the levels of the tissue inhibitor of matrix metalloproteinases-1 (TIMP-1) are higher in patients with rectal cancer as compared with healthy blood donors.Patients and methods. Two hundred and seventeen patients (147 male, 70 female) with histologically confirmed non-metastatic rectal cancer (clinical stage II–III) and 45 healthy blood donors (15 male, 30 female) were included in analysis. Patient’s mean age was 66 years (range: 34–87 years) and healthy … Show more

“…TIMP-1 is suggested to inhibit the proteolytic activity of MMPs [ 11 , 12 ], and the observed association between overweight and TIMP-1 may imply a protecting mechanism by overweight in COPD. We also confirmed, as previously shown [ 29 , 30 ], that serum TIMP-1 is associated with age. The MMP-9/TIMP-1 ratio was analysed in order to evaluate the protease-antiprotease imbalance of possible importance in the pathogenesis of COPD and, besides increasing pack years, decreasing FEV 1 % predicted was close to significantly related to the ratio.…”

“…colorectal, breast, lung, ovarian, bladder carcinoma6,9, but, also in a variety of nonmalignant conditions: asthma, diabetes, cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases 9. Increased TIMP-1 plasma levels were found in patients with colorectal cancer compared to healthy controls, and were associated with advanced disease stage and poor prognosis 6,8–12. In metastatic colorectal cancer, elevated level of the inhibitor in plasma was predictive for low probability of response to chemotherapy 13.…”
