Differences in perceptions of early childhood oral health‐related quality of life between fathers and mothers in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: The concern showed by Saudi fathers does not correlate to the oral status of their child. Saudi fathers may not be apt as proxies to assess the OHRQoL of their children.

“…Participants were selected from a representative community-based sample. Until now, the majority of studies evaluating OHRQoL in preschool children using ECO-HIS were studies aimed at validating the instrument, in other countries [Peker et al, 2011;Scarpelli et al, 2011;Martins-Júnior et al, 2012;Mei et al, 2012], developed using nonprobability sampling methods Aldrigui et al, 2011;Divaris et al, 2012;Pani et al, 2012] or for the evaluation of specific groups such as children of low socioeconomic status resident in suburban areas [Leal et al, 2012], HIV-positive children [Buczynski et al, 2011] and children with cerebral palsy [Du et al, 2010]. Another study assessed OHRQoL before and after rehabilitation procedures [Klaassen et al, 2009].…”

“…OHRQoL questionnaires, including Child Perception Questionnaire (CPQ11-14), the Parent-Caregivers Perceptions Questionnaire (P-CPQ), and the Family Impact Scale (FIS), were translated into Arabic and validated in Saudi Arabian samples [11, 12]. To date, all published studies report how oral disease affects life quality of patients in different settings; however, there is a lack of studies on how dental interventions impact OHRQoL.…”

“…In this study, mothers corresponded to 97% of the respondents, and this high percentage may be attributed to the fact that mothers usually accompany their children to the dental office, and are used to knowing their general health condition, thus being able to detect the impacts on their children's quality of life better than fathers 7,29 . Despite this existing evidence that parents may provide valid reports of their preschool children's OHRQoL, it is worth mentioning that their perception might be influenced by a series of factors.…”
