“…In contributing to the body of evidence on the efficacy of fitness classes for PA and related outcomes,22–26 we found that high levels of PA were maintained even when implemented in less-controlled and diverse community-delivered settings that included clinics, city-supported housing, parks, schools, and recreation centers. An unexpected finding of our research based on qualitative interviews was that the diverse locations, scheduling, and offerings of SA classes facilitated class participation for residents not only in relation to their home but also to their place of work.…”

“…Building from evidence on the health benefits of adult fitness classes such as Zumba [22][23][24][25] and Senior Fitness 26 and in response to the need for further evidence on implementation of PA interventions in real-world settings such as the community, 27 we aimed to better understand the PA-related benefits and opportunities for improvement when fitness classes are interwoven into community settings. Specific aims of this practice-based study were to (1) assess the amount of PA delivered via SA's adult fitness classes when delivered in "real-world" community-based settings, and (2) qualitatively explore highlights, perceived benefits, and recommendations for enhancing delivery of SA classes among participants and fitness class instructors.…”

“…La caminata, como una actividad aeróbica de leve a moderada intensidad 35 , constituye una ventaja para las personas con sobrepeso u obesidad porque se encuentran asociadas a una baja intensidad de esfuerzo y, por lo tanto, presentan valores más bajos de gasto energético, intensidad metabólica y cantidad de ejercicio al querer iniciar actividad física con ejercicios que requieren intensidad moderada a vigorosa 42 .…”

“…The sample size in the aforementioned study was relatively small (n = 11 to 14), and the women tested were also overweight, which somewhat biases the applicability of these findings to all post-menopausal women. Indeed, it has been shown that healthy-weight adult women spent a significantly lower percentage of Zumba class time at the lower levels of intensity (sedentary and lifestyle activity levels) and significantly more time at the highest levels (vigorous and very vigorous) compared to overweight and obese women [13]. The percentage of time at moderate and vigorous intensities in this study was 62.1 ± 15%, 50.1 ± 9.4% and 44.1 ± 11.9% in healthy-weight, overweight and obese women, respectively [13].…”

“…The fact that leaner women seem to spend more time at higher HR levels than women with greater body fat is very important to highlight, because one of the main marketing strategies of the Zumba ® Fitness industry is around weight loss. It is crucial to inform women that, based on the results previously described [13], they may not be able to work as hard and, hence, lose as much weight as they first believed [14] if they are overweight, for example. It should be noted, however, that these results [13] need to be confirmed by further studies.…”
