Differences in circadian phase and weekday/weekend sleep patterns in a sample of middle-aged morning types and evening types

Abstract: Factors contributing to sleep timing and sleep restriction in daily life include chronotype and less flexibility in times available for sleep on scheduled days versus free days. There is some evidence that these two factors interact, with morning types and evening types reporting similar sleep need, but evening types being more likely to accumulate a sleep debt during the week and to have greater sleep extension on weekend nights. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the independent contributions of ci… Show more

“…Sleep duration assessment in the UK biobank did not consider weekday and weekend sleep duration separately as conducted in the NDNS study since sleep duration may differ between those days. 29 Furthermore, self-report of sleep duration may differ by question format by reporting short sleep duration when asked a single question. 30 Sleep duration in the UK biobank study was assessed by asking one question in regard to sleep every 24 hours whereas our study assessed sleep duration by asking two separate questions of sleep based on weeknights and weekends.…”

“…The period between Friday evening and Monday morning has a distinctly different pattern, where the morning nadir occurs later, at 07:00 to 09:00 and the evening peak moves later and lasts longer. This could be the product of increased and delayed evening activity associated with weekends in an urban area [23,24].…”

“…Chronotype is a self-assessed description of circadian preferences that reflect the organization of the circadian system (22). An evening circadian preference, also called extreme eveningness or evening chronotype, is hypothesized to be a proxy marker of circadian system dysfunction because of its association with circadian phase delay (23). A desynchronization between the components of the circadian system favored by a circadian phase delay in individuals with an evening chronotype may represent a potential mechanism for the associated adverse health outcomes (24)(25)(26)(27).…”
