The objective of the study was to evaluate the annual pattern of its feeding habits in the newly colonised habitats of the Mušov reservoir on the Dyje River (the Danube basin, Czech Republic) with respect to natural food resources. In the reservoir, tubenose goby has established a numerous population, densely colonising stony rip-rap banks. Its diet was exclusively of animal origin with significant dominance of and preference for two food items -chironomid (Chironomidae) larvae and waterlouse (Asellus aquaticus), which contributed 40.2 and 27.6%, respectively, to the total food bulk ingested. The index of preponderance for the two items was also very high, amounting to 73.8 and 26.5, respectively. In the annual pattern, a remarkable preference for chironomid larvae was recorded in the summer period whilst waterlouse were consumed predominantly in winter months. The proportion of other food items was rather marginal -only corixids, copepods, ceratopogonids and cladocerans were of certain minor importance with proportions of 5.4, 4.3, 4.1 and 3.9%, respectively. Certain signs of cannibalism were also recorded, with 0.9 and 0.2% of the diet consisting of their own progeny and eggs, respectively. Predator-prey interactions between round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and Dreissena are an important component of the food web in their invaded range in North America and Europe. We conducted two experiments to test the effect of round goby predation on Dreissena in coastal lakes connected to eastern Lake Michigan, USA. First, we conducted a density gradient experiment using 1-m 2 cages stocked with 0 to 15 large round gobies (individuals 4 7.5 cm total length (TL)). Presence of large round gobies significantly reduced Dreissena densities in all cages. Second, we conducted an exclosure experiment (treatments: none, 6-mm, and 24-mm mesh) in four coastal lakes in littoral habitats. Excluding large round gobies did not significantly affect Dreissena densities in any of the lakes, although we did find a significant effect of excluding large-bodied (i.e., animals larger than adult round goby that cannot pass through 24-mm mesh) predators in one lake. In combination, our two experiments showed that the strength of predator-prey interactions between round goby and Dreissena can vary with location and/or conditions. We hypothesize that the strength of predator-prey interactions between round goby and Dreissena vary spatially across the aquatic landscape depending on habitat (e.g., rocky vs. sandy substrates), which is critical for understanding foodweb dynamics, especially in areas where the round goby and Dreissena are invasive.

1. Quantifying habitat associations and threats to the persistence of imperilled species is a fundamental step for initiating species recovery efforts, but the traits associated with species imperillment (e.g. rarity and vulnerability to stressors) also limit the ability to empirically inform recovery strategies. Novel sampling designs and modelling approaches are therefore needed to quantitatively assess habitat associations and the threats to species persistence. 2. To improve the understanding of habitat associations and threats for one of the rarest endangered freshwater fish species in Canada, northern madtom (Noturus stigmosus), two-species occupancy models were developed with two invasive gobies: round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) and tubenose goby (Proterorhinus marmoratus). Models were parameterized with data from a multi-year benthic trawling survey of two large Great Lakes tributaries in southern Ontario, Canada, and subsequently used to evaluate the need for reducing measurement error with future sampling efforts. 3. The probability of detecting northern madtom in the St. Clair (0.163) and Thames (0.194) rivers was low compared with round goby (St. Clair, 0.827; Thames, 0.833) and tubenose goby (St. Clair, 0.297). The best occupancy models indicated a negative association between northern madtom and round goby in the St. Clair River and the importance of gravel substrate for northern madtom. 4. Up to 16 repeated non-detections using benthic trawls are needed to be 95% confident that northern madtom is absent at a site, indicating that current sampling approaches are likely inadequate. 5. Despite low detection probabilities, intensive trawling surveys combined with the two-species occupancy modelling framework provided vital information for describing habitat associations for northern madtom and identified a significant negative association with round goby.
