Dietary Supplements and Sports Performance: Introduction and Vitamins

Abstract: Sports success is dependent primarily on genetic endowment in athletes with morphologic, psychologic, physiologic and metabolic traits specific to performance characteristics vital to their sport. Such genetically-endowed athletes must also receive optimal training to increase physical power, enhance mental strength, and provide a mechanical advantage. However, athletes often attempt to go beyond training and use substances and techniques, often referred to as ergogenics, in attempts to gain a competitive adva… Show more

“…The role of choline in maintaining structural integrity of myocytes may be important in reducing exercise-induced skeletal muscle turnover. Some research suggests that choline supplementation during vigorous dynamic exercise may improve athletic performance by delaying the fatigue response (Warber et al 2000), but no evidence is available on the beneficial effects of choline on anaerobic exercise regimes (Williams 2004). …”

“…These functions include enhancing muscle contraction, muscle protein anabolism, improved immune function, and enhanced anti-inflammatory action (Cannell et al, 2009;Hamilton, 2010;Schubert & DeLuca, 2010;Williams, 2004). A significant proportion of athletes training indoors have below-optimal levels of serum vitamin D (Lovell, 2008).…”
