Dietary polyphenols in lipid metabolism: A role of gut microbiome

Abstract: Polyphenols are a class of non-essential phytonutrients, which are abundant in fruits and vegetables. Dietary polyphenols or foods rich in polyphenols are widely recommended for metabolic health. Indeed, polyphenols (i.e., catechins, resveratrol, and curcumin) are increasingly recognized as a regulator of lipid metabolism in host. The mechanisms, at least in part, may be highly associated with gut microbiome. This review mainly discussed the beneficial effects of dietary polyphenols on lipid metabolism. The po… Show more

“…The intestinal tract is the largest independent immune system in the body. It is continuously exposed to foreign antigens and the distinction between harmful and harmless antigens is necessary for the intestine to ensure an appropriate response to every antigen ( Weiner, 2000 ; Ma et al, 2020a ). The gut needs to produce a strong protective immune response to resist the invasion of pathogenic antigens, while similar reactions to harmless antigens such as dietary proteins or symbiotic microorganisms, may lead to chronic inflammatory diseases.…”

“… 15 Consumptions of tea, vegetables and fruits that are rich in dietary polyphenols have also been found to be effective in improving blood lipid parameters. 16 Therefore, the issue as to whether blood lipids play a role in the effect of diet on T2DM is another question that we focused on in this study.…”

“…Specific components of food, for example, ginseng or resveratrol from cabernet sauvignon grape extract, are considered to be healthy through microbial modifications ( 175 , 176 ). Generally, dietary polyphenols have an influence on lipid metabolism and related metabolic diseases through the prebiotic effect on the selection of beneficial bacteria.…”
