Dietary Plasma Protein Affects the Immune Response of Weaned Rats Challenged with S. aureus Superantigen B

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the potential modulatory effects of diets supplemented with spray-dried animal plasma (SDAP) or immunoglobulin concentrates (IC) on the immune response of rats challenged with Staphylococcus aureus enterotoxin B (SEB). Lewis rats were fed diets containing 80 g of SDAP/kg diet, 22.7 g of IC/kg diet, or milk proteins (Control diet) from postnatal d 21 (weaning) for 14 d. On d 30 and 33, rats were given SEB (0.5 mg/kg body weight; i.p.). Organized gut-associated lymphoid tis… Show more

“…Furthermore, energy metabolism status of piglets fed SDPP diet may be optimised, as indicated by the lower serum level of TG (-29%, P<0.05) compared to pigs fed control diet (Table 5), which may be also associated with metabolism of ingested fat (Jones et al, 1992). In addition, the SDPP can alleviate the activation of gut-associated lymphatic tissue system and systematic immune cells, thus allowing more energy for growth (Demas et al, 1997;Perez-Bosque et al, 2004). In our previous study, serum level of cortisol has been successfully measured to reflect the stress-relief effect of dietary treatments in weaning piglets (Che et al, 2012).…”

“…As described by Meyer and Harvey (2004), the cell counts in the present study are within standard counts for swine. Furthermore, plasma can relieve the activation of the lymphatic tissue system associated with the intestine and cells from the systemic immune system, allowing more energy for growth (Demas et al, 1997;Perez-Bosque et al, 2004). The weaning process, along with its challenges and changes, is associated with a greater activation of the immune system in piglets, which is generally associated with intestinal inflammation and a systemic proinflammatory response with increased production of defense cells and cytokines (Moretó and Pérez-Bosque, 2009).…”
