Dietary patterns in weight loss maintenance: results from the MedWeight study

Abstract: Men maintaining weight loss were much more likely to adhere to a healthy eating pattern. Eating at home, involvement in meal preparation, higher eating frequency and slower eating rate were also associated with maintenance. These lifestyle habits of successful maintainers provide target behaviors to improve obesity treatment.

“…Note, those enrolled in the NWCR are not representative of all individuals who have attempted weight loss and who have experienced long-term maintenance, but rather are self-selected based on their success. Nevertheless, some findings from the NWCR are supported by those from the MedWeight registry in Greece, which includes both weight loss maintainers and regainers [82,83,84,85,86]. Among male registrants, weight loss maintainers were found to exhibit greater physical activity (approximately 200 kcal/day more than regainers), greater adherence to a dietary pattern emphasizing home-cooked meals, fruits, vegetables, unprocessed grains, nuts, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, and olive oil, and lower daily intakes of salty snacks, sugary soda beverages, and alcohol.…”

“…Long‐term successful weight control requires continued consumption of a lower‐calorie diet, engagement in high levels of physical activity, and frequent self‐monitoring of weight, eating, and activity . The National Weight Control Registry and others have comprehensively described these strategies. The frequency and intensity with which these behaviors are practiced have been consistently related to duration and magnitude of long‐term successful weight control.…”
