Dietary Patterns and the Incidence of Type 2 Diabetes

Abstract: Major dietary patterns were studied for the ability to predict type 2 diabetes mellitus in a cohort of 4,304 Finnish men and women aged 40-69 years and free of diabetes at baseline in 1967-1972. Factor analysis was used to identify dietary patterns from dietary data that were collected using a 1-year dietary history interview. A total of 383 incident cases of type 2 diabetes occurred during a 23-year follow-up. Two major dietary patterns were identified. The pattern labeled "prudent" was characterized by highe… Show more

“…Factor 3 positively correlated with income and education and negatively correlated with BMI, fasting, and 2-hr glucose. Two out of three dietary patterns identified by the current study were similar to previously reported patterns labeled as "Prudent" (factor 1) and "Western" (factor 3) patterns in Native Canadian (21), British (22), US (23) and Finnish studies (24). However, unlike the association of these dietary patterns with T2DM in other studies, our results did not show any association between factor 1 or factor 3 and T2DM prevalence.…”

“…A pattern characterized by higher intake of fruits and vegetables (prudent pattern) was associated with a reduced risk of type II diabetes, whereas a pattern characterized by higher intake of foods typical of Western diets, including processed meat, French fry, sugarsweetened beverages, food with high glycemic load, was associated with an increased risk. 74,75 To combat the epidemic of overweight at a population level, it is important to develop strategies to increase habitual physical activity and to prevent overweight and obesity in collaboration with communities, families, schools, work sites, health-care professionals, media and policymakers.…”

“…In further analyses we studied the relative importance of the previously identified dietary patterns, the 'prudent' pattern (characterized by fruit and vegetables) and the 'conservative' pattern (characterized by butter, potatoes, red meat, and whole milk) (Montonen et al, 2004a). To identify dietary patterns, the principal component method with Varimax rotation in the factor analysis was applied (SAS/ STAT, 1989;Hu et al, 1999).…”

“…Besides the studies focusing on individual foods or nutrients, other studies have recently followed a dietary pattern approach and have found certain dietary patterns to be associated with the incidence of diabetes (van Dam et al, 2002a;Montonen et al, 2004a) or biomarkers of diabetes development (Fung et al, 2001). The advantage of the dietary pattern approach is that interactions between potentially effective nutrients are automatically included in the effect estimate.…”
