Dietary overlap and selectivity among silver carp and two native filter feeders in the Wabash River

Abstract: Silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) are a potential threat to native filter feeders and larval fish due to dietary overlap. To test for dietary overlap and selectivity, we collected diet samples from invasive silver carp and two native filter feeders (gizzard shad Dorosoma cepedianum and bigmouth buffalo Ictiobus cyprinellus), and river plankton samples at three sites on the Wabash River during the spring and summer of 2015.Contents of diet items were identified to major group and quantified. Diet propor… Show more

“…2017). The negative effects of Silver Carp on density and condition of native planktivorous fishes were confirmed by other studies, suggesting that competition with Silver Carp for plankton has negatively affected native planktivore condition and growth (Minder and Pyron 2018; Fletcher et al. 2019).…”

“…They found that densities of Gizzard Shad and piscivorous Bowfin Amia calva declined in the Mississippi River after the introduction and irruption of the Silver Carp population, while their laboratory results with age-0 stages of Silver Carp, Gizzard Shad, and Bigmouth Buffalo showed reduced survival of Gizzard Shad and reduced growth of Bigmouth Buffalo in the presence of high Silver Carp densities (Phelps et al 2017). The negative effects of Silver Carp on density and condition of native planktivorous fishes were confirmed by other studies, suggesting that competition with Silver Carp for plankton has negatively affected native planktivore condition and growth (Minder and Pyron 2018;Fletcher et al 2019).…”

“…The proportions of herbivores and detritivores were also low in non‐invaded reaches, indicating that direct competition for Silver Carp within these reaches may be sparse following future invasion. Silver Carp also share significant diet overlap with several species across the UMRS (Minder & Pyron, 2018). As an example, Gizzard Shad ( Dorosoma cepedianum ) is classified as an herbivore and directly competes with Silver Carp.…”

“…To answer these questions, we take one‐day forecasting of in‐stream nitrate concentrations in Wabash River Basin (WRB) in the Midwestern US as a case study. The WRB is the epicentre of nutrient pollution in the United States (Gammon, 1998; Minder & Pyron, 2018; Muenich et al, 2016; Tan et al, 2016; US Army Corps of Engineers, 2011) and includes a growing network of real‐time nutrient monitoring that could be leveraged for operational forecasting. Illinois, Indiana and Ohio are actively expanding nutrient monitoring with real‐time sensors in the basin and water quality impairments are increasingly concerning (Tan et al, 2016), making the WRB a relevant test case relvantent from management and practical standpoints.…”
