The effect of 2 dosages (1.5 and 3.0%) of ImmuPlus, a polyherbal immunomodulator, was tested on growth and inflammatory response to Fruend's complete adjuvant (FCA) in common carp, Cyprinus carpio. The growth study was carried out for 120 days in nine 25 m 2 outdoor cement tanks by feeding triplicate groups of 40 common carp fry (av. wt. 0.4±0.03 g) with a control (T 0 without ImmuPlus) and two test diets (T 1 and T 2 with 1.5 and 3.0% ImmuPlus respectively). At the end of the growth experiment, 20 fish from each of these were used for evaluating the inflammatory response to FCA. The final weight gain of fish fed the test diets was significantly (P<0.05) higher, there being no difference between the two treatments. Specific growth rate of treated fish showed a significant increase (P<0.05) over that of the control fish. Supplementation of diet with ImmuPlus improved (P<0.05) survival of fish. Protein content of fish carcass was significantly (P<0.05) higher in the fish receiving the two test diets, while fat content was higher (P<0.05) only in fish from T 2 treatment. Enhanced (P<0.05) protease and amylase activity was found in the treated fish. Even though there were no marked differences in the overall inflammatory response between the control and treated fish following FCA administration, recovery was faster in the latter, with stronger encapsulation of the adjuvant droplets. The results reflect the ability of Immuplus to promote growth and improve inflammatory response when administered through diet.

The effects of dietary supplementing natural additives [yacon (YC), ginger (GG), and blueberry (BB)] on growth, feed utilization, and body composition of juvenile rockfish were compared to those of ethoxyquin (EQ), which is commonly used to prevent rancidity of fish feed. A total of 480 fish were distributed randomly into 12 50-L flowthrough tanks (40 fish/tank). Four experimental diets were prepared: the control diet (Con) with 0.01% EQ, and the YC, GG and BB diets containing 1% YC, GG, and BB instead of wheat flour. Each diet was assigned randomly to triplicate tanks of fish, which were hand fed to satiation twice daily for 8 weeks. Weight gain of fish fed the YC diet was higher than that of fish fed all other diets. Feed efficiency (FE), protein efficiency ratio (PER), and protein retention (PR) in fish fed the YC diet were higher than those in fish fed the other diets. Whole-body chemical composition of the fish was affected by the additive sources. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with GG effectively improved weight gain and feed utilization (FE, PER, and PR) of juvenile rockfish.

Plants have been reported to produce various effects such as antistress, growth promotion, appetite stimulation, immunostimulation, aphrodisiac and to have antipathogen properties in fish and shrimp aquaculture due to their varied active principles such as alkaloids, terpenoids, tannins, saponins and flavonoids. To date, most scientific studies on the use of medicinal plants in aquaculture have focused on identification of biological activity rather than natural product determination. The plant species that have displayed the highest potential for use in aquaculture are garlic (Allium sativum), pomegranate (Punica granatum), bermuda grass (Cynodon dactylon), Indian ginseng (Whitania somnifera) and ginger (Zingiber officinale). Algae are considered to be a rich source of original bioactive molecules which display multiple bioactivities. In aquaculture, several recent studies have showed the potential of algae for the treatment of pathogens or to improve fish fitness.
