A 10‐week feeding trial was conducted to estimate the dietary vitamin K requirements of juvenile Chinese soft‐shelled turtles, Pelodiscus sinensis, using menadione sodium bisulphite (MSB) as the vitamin K source. Juvenile soft‐shelled turtles with 6.1 ± 0.1 g body weight were individually reared and fed diets containing seven levels of MSB (0.0, 5.0, 8.9, 12.3, 16.6, 20.7 and 41.0 mg/kg). Turtles fed with an MSB‐free diet exhibited the lowest feed utilization, carapace Ca concentrations, carapace strength or liver menaquinone (MK‐4) concentrations among all dietary groups. Weight gain (WG) in the turtles tended to increase with increase in dietary MSB until a dietary MSB level of 16.6 mg/kg, where WG levelled off. Total plasma prothrombin concentrations, an indicator for blood clotting function, in the turtles fed on MSB supplemented diets were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than those in turtles fed on MSB supplemented diets. Liver MSB concentrations increased with increase in dietary MSB. Using broken‐line or sigmoidal regression model, the vitamin K requirements of juvenile Chinese soft‐shelled turtles based on WG, total plasma prothrombin concentrations and liver vitamin K were 21.5, 25.8 and 29.9 mg MSB per kg, respectively.

The objective of the present study was to estimate the dietary thiamine (vitamin B 1 ) requirement of juvenile soft-shelled turtles, Pelodiscus sinensis. Eight experimental diets containing 0, 1. 90, 3.63, 5.65, 7.51, 9.62, 11.37 and 13.64 mg thiamine/kg diet were fed to 160 soft-shelled turtles reared individually for 10 weeks. The turtles had an average weight of 5.33 ± 0.21 g. Among all the dietary groups, weight gain, feed utilization and tissue thiamine were the lowest in the turtles fed with a thiamine-free diet. The variables increased when dietary thiamine increased and then levelled off beyond 3.63 mg/kg diet. In contrast, plasma pyruvate and lactate concentrations in turtles decreased when dietary thiamine increased and then levelled off beyond 3.63 and 5.65 mg/kg diet respectively. Estimation using a broken-line regression model, the vitamin B 1 requirement of soft-shelled turtles was 3.2 mg thiamine/kg diet based on weight gain and plasma lactate concentration. When tissue thiamine and plasma pyruvate concentrations were used as the indicators, the estimated requirement was 5.4-6.5 mg/kg diet. Introducción. El contenido mineral de los alimentos para mascotas no siempre está presente en la etiqueta. Es importante conocer esta información para valorar el aporte nutricional del alimento. Objetivo. Determinar el contenido de Ca, P, K, Na, Mg, S, Cu, I, Fe, Mn y Zn en 34 alimentos importados para perros, gatos, conejos, hámsters, peces ornamentales y tortugas, y comparar los resultados con las recomendaciones encontradas en la literatura. Materiales y métodos. Durante los meses de agosto y diciembre del año 2018, se obtuvieron diez muestras de alimentos para perros y gatos, cinco para peces ornamentales, cuatro para tortugas, tres para hámster y dos para conejos. Estas se adquirieron de manera directa en diferentes puntos de venta en la Gran Área Metropolitana, San José, Costa Rica. Las muestras se analizaron en el Centro de Investigación en Nutrición Animal de la Universidad de Costa Rica. Se cuantificaron los minerales Ca, P, K, Mg, S, Cu, I, Fe, Mn, y Zn con base en la metodología recomendada por la Association of Official Analytical Chemists. Se calculó el contenido promedio por grupo de alimento según la especie animal, la desviación estándar, valores máximo y mínimo; se comparó con las recomendaciones nutricionales para minerales encontradas en la literatura. Resultados. Los alimentos estudiados cumplieron, en promedio, con los requerimientos minerales de los animales de compañía. Se observaron desbalances en el contenido de Ca, P y Mg para el caso de alimentos para tortugas, altos contenidos de yodo en alimentos para perros y relaciones desbalanceadas entre minerales. Conclusiones. Se generó una base de datos con valores promedios y su dispersión en once minerales en 34 muestras de alimentos comerciales de siete animales de compañía en Costa Rica. Se observó la poca información sobre límites superiores recomendados y requerimientos en especies como hámster, peces ornamentales o tortugas.
