Dietary hawthorn-leaves flavonoids improves ovarian function and liver lipid metabolism in aged breeder hens

Abstract: Hawthorn-leaves flavonoids ( HF ), extracted from hawthorn leaves, were reported to exert antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and hypolipidemic properties. The aim of our study was to investigate the effects of dietary HF on the reproduction performance and liver lipid metabolism of aged breeder hens. A total of 270 aged Qiling breeder hens (60-wk-old) were randomly divided into 3 treatments: 1) basic corn-soybean diet ( CON ); 2) basic corn-soybean diet supplemented wi… Show more

“…The results of this study clearly indicate that with increased levels of E 2 and ER-α/β expression, the expression levels of ApoVLDLII, ApoB , and VTGII mRNAs and genes related to yolk precursor production increased in the liver of laying hens, and serum levels of VLDLy and VTG increased significantly. In addition, caged hens may be obese due to an ad libitum diet, restricted exercise, or reduced levels of lipid metabolism, which may be a natural cause of metabolic diseases such as fatty liver syndrome in older laying hens ( Rozenboim et al, 2016 ; Dai et al, 2021 ). The present study verified that FVS significantly reduced the abdominal lipid rate, attenuated the number of lipid droplets and the amount of inflammatory infiltration in the liver, resulted in significantly lower AST and ALT levels, and reduced the accumulation of TG and T-CHO in the liver and serum, with significantly higher gene expression levels associated with lipogenesis (FAS), lipid transport (MTTP), and lipolysis (PPAR-α/β).…”

“…In oviparous animals, this synthesis of yolk precursor substances in the liver, such as VTG and apoB, is regulated by E2. VTG, once synthesized, passes directly into the blood circulation, while apoB combines with VLDL to form apoVLDL before being transported in the blood [ 28 ]. Yolk lipids are mainly synthesized in the liver and transported to the ovary by yolk-targeted specific VLDL and phospholipid-rich lipoprotein (also known as vitellogenin), which are recognized by their receptors (VLDLR) on the membrane and brought into the ovary [ 29 ].…”
