Dietary flavonoids as cancer-preventive and therapeutic biofactors

Abstract: Flavonoids are present in many plants, and hence, in foods and ingredients derived from them. These polyphenolic compounds have attracted renewed attention as potential anticarcinogens, and the molecular mechanisms of their anticarcinogenic effects and their bioavailability have been extensively explored. In this review, we focus on the major dietary flavonoids; flavones, flavonols, and flavan-3-ols (catechins), and evaluate their roles in cancer prevention. After absorption with or without metabolic conjugati… Show more

“…1,2) Although various chemical drugs have been developed, 3,4) frequent chemoresistance and side effects in patients with NSCLC require the development of new preventive and therapeutic agents. High intake of flavonoids from fruits and vegetables is associated with a low risk of various cancers, [5][6][7][8][9][10] including lung cancer. 11,12) Of these polyphenolic flavonoids, quercetin is readily found in fruits, vegetables, green and black tea, and various medical plants such as Euonymus alatus (Thunb.)…”

“…Flavonoid plays such diverse roles as protectants against UV radiation and pathogens in plants (Shirley 1996;Fini et al 2011). In addition, as human diet, it has health-promoting effects as potent antioxidant and anticancer agents (Cook and Samman 1996;Lotito and Frei 2006;Clere et al 2011;Cushnie and Lamb 2011;Nishiumi et al 2011;Russo et al 2012).…”
