Dietary Fiber and Gut Microbiota in Renal Diets

Abstract: Nutrition is crucial for the management of patients affected by chronic kidney disease (CKD) to slow down disease progression and to correct symptoms. The mainstay of the nutritional approach to renal patients is protein restriction coupled with adequate energy supply to prevent malnutrition. However, other aspects of renal diets, including fiber content, can be beneficial. This paper summarizes the latest literature on the role of different types of dietary fiber in CKD, with special attention to gut microbio… Show more

“…increase in physical activity and improvement of diet 38 . Indeed, one can recommend a fiber-rich diet because it shortens intestinal transit time (via bulking effect 39 ) and, additionally, is a part of healthy dietary patterns that are associated with lower mortality in CKD patients 40 . However, based on the high prevalence of bloating among CKD patients in our study, as well as that some CKD patients require fluid intake restriction, the recommendation of a diet rich in fiber should be given cautiously.…”

“…Moreover, it decreases the bacterial generation of uremic toxins. 53 High dietary fiber intake is also helpful in reducing inflammation. Among 650 maintenance hemodialysis patients 54 fiber intake reduced Creactive protein, and oxidative stress, which may also impact graft survival.…”

“…MD could also positively impact the microbiome. Considering its plasticity and the nutrition capacity to dysregulate intestinal bacterial composition and physiological functions, dietary adjustments could be considered therapeutic interventions in these pathological conditions [ 162 ]. Nutritional strategies directly targeting gut microbiota might represent a correct way to restore human-microbiome relationship [ 163 ].…”
