BACKGROUNDAfter the peak laying stage, laying hens become susceptible to lipid accumulation and inflammatory reactions. The objective of this experiment was to examine the impact of quercetin and genistein on egg quality and lipid profiles in laying hens. A total of 240 Hy‐line Browns were randomly assigned to three dietary treatments. Each treatment had eight replicates, with 10 hens in each replicate, and the hens were aged between 46 and 56 weeks. The test diets consisted of a corn‐soybean meal‐based basal diet, a basal diet supplemented with 300 mg kg‐1 quercetin, and a basal diet supplemented with 300 mg kg‐1 quercetin and 40 mg kg‐1 genistein.RESULTSResults showed that separately supplemental quercetin significantly improved egg quality (eggshell strength, albumen height and Haugh unit, P < 0.05), and reduced the deposition of abdominal fat (P < 0.05). Our finding also showed that separately or as a combination, supplemental quercetin and genistein significantly increased eggshell thickness (P < 0.05), decreased the levels of lipides in serum (LDL‐C, CHO, TG and NEFA, P < 0.05) and significantly increased serum immunoglobulins (IgA and IgG, P < 0.05), and promoted the expression of splenic immune‐related genes (IgA and IL‐4, P < 0.05).CONCLUSIONThis study confirmed that supplemental quercetin and genistein, either separately or in combination, can enhance eggshell thickness, lipid profiles, and immune function in aging hens. Moreover, both quercetin alone and quercetin + genistein exhibited similar abilities to lower lipid levels and improve immune function.This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

Sugar-Sweetened Beverage Intake and Motor Function Among Autistic and Typically Developed Children

Background and ObjectivesThe relationship between brain function and sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) is widely explored, but the motor function was not included. We aim to explore the relationship between SSBs and motor function among children with or without autism.MethodsParticipants were a representative autism sample (ASD, n = 106) comprising ages ranging 6–9 years and their age-matched typical counterparts (TD, n = 207), recruited in the research center of Guangzhou, China. Valid questionnaires of parent-reported including weekly SSBs intake, physical activity (PA), sedentary time (ST), and motor coordination function was used to collect relevant information. SSBs intake was further classified as no intake (no habit of taking SSBs), small to medium intake (<375 ml/week), and large intake (375 ml/week or more). Physical activity, sedentary time, and motor coordination function among the mentioned three groups as well as ASD vs. TD was compared via general linear models.ResultsCompared with TD children, ASD children showed less vigorous PA (4.23 ± 0.34 h vs. 2.77 ± 0.49 h, p = 0.015) as well as overall sedentary time (5.52 ± 1.89 h vs. 3.67 ± 0.28 h, 3.49 ± 0.16 h vs. 2.68 ± 0.24 h, and 34.59 ± 1.15 h vs. 23.69 ± 1.69 h, TD vs. ASD, sedentary time at weekdays, weekends and total ST in a week, respectively, all p < 0.05), lower scores in the developmental coordination disorder questionnaire (fine motor and handwriting: 14.21 ± 0.26 vs. 12.30 ± 0.38, general coordination: 28.90 ± 0.36 vs. 25.17 ± 0.53, control during movement: 24.56 ± 0.36 vs. 18.86 ± 0.53, and total score: 67.67 ± 0.75 vs. 56.33 ± 1.10, TD vs. ASD, all p < 0.05). Stratified by SSBs intake, TD children with small to medium SSBs intake showed the lowest sedentary time both on weekdays and weekends (all p < 0.05), they also performed worst in fine motor and handwriting skills (p < 0.05).ConclusionThe association between SSBs and motor function was observed in typical development children, but not autistic children. A larger sample size study with a longitudinal design is warranted to confirm the association between SSBs and sedentary time among typically developed children and the potential causation direction.

Introdução: O consumo alimentar anti-inflamatório apresenta propriedades de uma dieta antioxidante, sendo ele considerado uma estratégia de prevenção e combate ao estresse oxidativo. Um método de avaliação desse potencial antioxidante do consumo alimentar é através da Capacidade Antioxidante Total da Dieta (dCAT). Objetivo: Avaliar a dCAT e sua associação com o estado nutricional, risco de desnutrição e inflamação em crianças e adolescentes hospitalizados. Metodologia: Estudo transversal realizado com crianças e adolescentes, admitidos no setor de pediatria de um hospital filantrópico de Viçosa – MG, Brasil, entre 2014 e 2019. O risco nutricional foi avaliado através do Screening Tool for Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth (STRONGKids). Medidas de peso e comprimento/estatura foram aferidas e índices antropométricos avaliados. A dCAT foi obtida através uma planilha em Microsoft Excel® que considerava os valores de dCAT de cada alimento, baseado no consumo alimentar do dia anterior à realização da triagem nutricional (Recordatório de 24 horas - R24h). Dados de bioquímicos foram coletados do prontuário médico. Os testes Kolmogorov- Smirnov, qui-quadrado de Pearson, teste exato de Fisher e análises de regressão logística foram realizadas, adotando-se p<0,05. Resultados: Participaram do estudo 403 pacientes (54,8% sexo masculino), com idade mediana de 3,4 (1 - 14) anos. A prevalência de risco nutricional foi de 80,1% (médio ou alto risco), de déficit nutricional entre 6,0% e 7,4%, de acordo com o índice antropométrico avaliado, e de anemia 59,7%, PCR alterada 75,6%. A dCAT se correlacionou inversamente com a pontuação do STRONGKids e diretamente com hemoglobina. Aqueles que estavam no maiores tercis de dCAT apresentaram menores chances de déficits antropométricos pelos índices P/I, E/I e IMC/I e o parâmetro inflamatório avaliado - PCR não demonstrou qualquer associação. Conclusão: A maior dCAT associou-se com o menor risco nutricional e melhor estado nutricional em crianças e adolescentes hospitalizados, indicando a necessidade do diagnóstico nutricional precoce, incluindo análise do consumo alimentar, bem como da promoção da alimentação adequada e saudável também em ambiente hospitalar.Palavras-chave: Desnutrição.
