IntroductionWomen from low and middle income countries are generally more likely to have sub-optimal calcium intake. The objective of this study was to assess serum calcium disorders and correlates in late pregnancy.MethodsWe conducted from December 2018 to April 2019, a cross-sectional hospital-based study targeting pregnant women in late pregnancy in the Nkongsamba Regional Hospital. Data were collected by measurement of parameters (weight, height, blood pressure and foetal birthweight), administration of a semi-structured questionnaire and analysis of blood samples collected from each participant. Absorption spectrophotometry was used to measure serum calcium and albumin concentrations and corrected serum calcium calculated from the Payne’s equation. With a statistical significant threshold set at p-value = 0.05, the odds ratio was used as a measure of the strength of association between hypocalcaemia and maternofoetal variables.ResultsWe enrolled a total of 354 consenting participants with a mean age of 27.41±5.84 years. The prevalence of hypocalcaemia in late pregnancy was 58.76 [53.42–63.90]%. The rate of calcium supplementation in pregnancy was 57.63[52.28–62.80]% with a mean duration of supplementation of 3.69±1.47 months. When controlled for marital status, age, level of education, and gestational age at delivery, pregnant women with systolic blood pressures below 130 mmHg were significantly less likely to have hypocalcaemia than their counterparts with higher systolic blood pressures (Adjusted Odds Ratio = 0.41[0.18–0.89], p-value = 0.020). No statistically significant associations were found between diastolic blood pressure, body mass index, foetal birth weight and hypocalcaemia.ConclusionHypocalcaemia in late pregnancy is highly prevalent (59%) among women accessing reproductive services at the Nkongsamba Regional Hospital. There is also a wide gap in calcium supplementation compared to World Health Organization recommendations. Hypocalcaemia is significantly associated to higher systolic blood pressure in pregnancy. Systematic calcium supplementation and consumption of high calcium containing locally available meals should be encouraged.

Objective: To identify the magnitude of anaemia and deficiencies of Fe (ID) and vitamin A (VAD) and their associated factors among rural women and children. Design: Cross-sectional, comprising a household, health and nutrition survey and determination of Hb, biochemical (serum concentrations of ferritin, retinol, C-reactive protein and α 1 -acid glycoprotein) and anthropometric parameters. Multivariate logistic regression examined associations of various factors with anaemia and micronutrient deficiencies. Setting: Kalalé district, northern Benin. Subjects: Mother-child pairs (n 767): non-pregnant women of reproductive age (15-49 years) and children 6-59 months old. Results: In women, the overall prevalence of anaemia, ID, Fe-deficiency anaemia (IDA) and VAD was 47·7, 18·3, 11·3 and 17·7 %, respectively. A similar pattern for anaemia (82·4 %), ID (23·6 %) and IDA (21·2 %) was observed among children, while VAD was greater at 33·6 %. Greater risk of anaemia, ID and VAD was found for low maternal education, maternal farming activity, maternal health status, low food diversity, lack of fruits and vegetables consumption, low protein foods consumption, high infection, anthropometric deficits, large family size, poor sanitary conditions and low socio-economic status. Strong differences were also observed by ethnicity, women's group participation and source of information. Finally, age had a significant effect in children, with those aged 6-23 months having the highest risk for anaemia and those aged 12-23 months at risk for ID and IDA. Conclusions: Anaemia, ID and VAD were high among rural women and their children in northern Benin, although ID accounted for a small proportion of anaemia. Multicentre studies in various parts of the country are needed to substantiate the present results, so that appropriate and beneficial strategies for micronutrient supplementation and interventions to improve food diversity and quality can be planned.

Kebutuhan kalsium meningkat selama kehamilan, selain penting bagi kesehatan tulang ibu dan janin, diketahui pula asupan kalsium yang cukup dapat mengurangi kejadian hipertensi dalam kehamilan dan mencegah kelahiran prematur. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui hubungan pengetahuan dengan penggunaan tablet kalsium laktat pada ibu hamil di UPTD Puskesmas Cikijing Kabupaten Majalengka Tahun 2019. Jenis penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian kuantitatif dengan pendekatan cross sectional. Sampel dalam penelitian ini adalah ibu hamil di UPTD Puskesmas Cikijing Kabupaten Majalengka sebanyak 91 orang dengan teknik accidental sampling. Penelitiannya dilakukan pada tanggal 15 April-10 Juni 2019. Analisis datanya menggunakan analisis univariat dengan distribusi frekuensi dan analisis bivariat dengan uji chi square. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa lebih dari setengah (69,2%) ibu hamil yang tidak menggunakan tablet kalsium laktat dan kurang dari setengah (33,0%) ibu hamil berpengetahuan kurang. Ada hubungan pengetahuan dengan penggunaan tablet kalsium laktat pada ibu hamil di UPTD Puskesmas Cikijing Kabupaten Majalengka Tahun 2019 (r value = 0,014). Petugas kesehatan agar memberikan penyuluhan tentang tablet kalsium laktat pada ibu hamil guna mencegah mengurangi risiko preeklampsia dan mencegah kelahiran prematur serta memotivasi ibu hamil untuk mengkonsumsi kalsium laktat selama kehamilan sesuai dengan dosis dan petunjuk terutama bagi ibu hamil yang sering mengeluh keram atau kesemutan serta berisiko osteoporosis. Kata kunci: Pengetahuan; ibu hamil; tablet kalsium laktat.
