Dietary Anti-Aging Polyphenols and Potential Mechanisms

Abstract: For years, the consumption of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables has been considered healthy, increasing longevity, and decreasing morbidities. With the assistance of basic research investigating the potential mechanisms, it has become clear that the beneficial effects of plant-based foods are mainly due to the large amount of bioactive phenolic compounds contained. Indeed, substantial dietary intervention studies in humans have supported that the supplementation of polyphenols have various health-promoting … Show more

“…Sweet cherries are fruit with high content of phenolic compounds, mainly anthocyanins, which are primarily responsible for the beneficial health effects attributed to cherry consumption [6,[33][34][35]. In fact, phenolic compounds and especially anthocyanins have strong antioxidant activity and preventive effects on a wide range of age-related and chronic diseases, such as neurodegenerative, cardiovascular and oncologic diseases, hypertension, obesity and diabetes, among others [36][37][38]. The results of the present research show enhanced levels of phenolic and total and individual anthocyanin concentrations in fruit from melatonin-treated trees in the three sweet cherry cultivars tested.…”

“…Results of the present experiments show that preharvest melatonin treatments enhanced total phenolic compound and total and individual anthocyanin concentrations at harvest, leading to increases in H-TAA, with these effects being maintained during storage. Thus, preharvest melatonin treatments would improve the pomegranate health beneficial effects for human consumption since phenolic compounds, including anthocyanins, are a wide range of secondary metabolites with preventive effects on a wide range of chronic and age-related diseases, such as hypertension, obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular, neurodegenerative and oncologic diseases [ 9 , 37 , 38 , 39 ]. No previous reports are available in the literature regarding the effect of melatonin treatment on pomegranate bioactive compounds, and little information exists on other fruit species.…”

“…The anti-aging properties of dietary polyphenols have been ascribed at least in part to their antioxidant properties that, through several mechanisms including ROS-scavenging actions, contribute to reduce oxidative stress. These mechanisms play an important role in the aging process and various aging-associated chronic diseases [ 48 ], including bone mineral density, by preventing oxidation-induced damage to bone cells [ 49 ].…”
