Diet quality is directly associated with quality of life in breast cancer survivors

Abstract: Post-diagnosis diet quality is directly associated with subsequent mental and physical functioning in breast cancer survivors. This association is stronger for mental functioning than for physical functioning. The association remains strong after control for potential confounding variables.

“…Women with hormone receptor -negative tumors continue to remain at high risk of a poor outcome. Whether a low-fat, plant-based diet can reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence or progression in women with estrogen receptor -(ERÀ) or progesterone receptor -negative (PRÀ) tumors or the extent to which such an intervention may have an additive or no effect for women with estrogen receptor -positive (ER+) tumors using either tamoxifen or raloxifene are important questions that deserve further scrutiny in existing breast cancer survivor cohorts (13)(14)(15). Such approaches will help tailor individual therapies for optimal breast cancer outcomes.…”

“…Because much of the advice is untested, the WHEL study and other studies in progress (7,(13)(14)(15) provide extremely important opportunities to support, or lay to rest, the role of lifestyle interventions in maximizing disease-free survival among breast cancer patients. We look forward to these results with the hope that the long and winding road of diet and breast cancer prevention may lead to the door of improved health for all breast cancer patients.…”

“…7) In addition, we analyzed a diet quality according to the categories from Oh et al's study 21) (i.e., < 20% of energy from fat; < 300 mg/day intake of cholesterol; and more than 7 servings/ day of vegetables and fruits). These three nutritional indicators present a better diet quality in Korean population.…”

“…One area receiving increased attention is the post-diagnosis health behavior of cancer survivors. 3) Studies have examined the prevalence of lifestyle behaviors among cancer survivors 3,4) and their positive influence on health-related QOL (HRQOL) [5][6][7] and on cancer recurrence and survival. 8,9) Physical activity (PA) and diet are two lifestyle behaviors shown to significantly influence the HRQOL and prognosis of cancer survivors.…”
