Diet Patterns and Niche Overlap of Muskellunge and Co‐Occurring Piscivores in Minnesota Lakes

Abstract: Muskellunge Esox masquinongy, Northern Pike E. lucius, Walleye Sander vitreus, and Largemouth Bass Micropterus salmoides are popular sport fish that often co-occur in aquatic systems. Although numerous studies have investigated interactions among these species, the simultaneous evaluation of diet patterns and niche overlap among all four species has not been conducted. Our experimental design aimed to quantify diet overlap among Muskellunge and the other piscivores, while lakes without Muskellunge were also sa… Show more

“…Finally, during the 10-min mirror phase of the behavioral assay, the behavioral software was again used to quantify all of the behaviors described above in addition to the total number of mirror "displays" performed by each fish. In this study, a display was deemed to have occurred when a fish approached within one body length of the mirror and displayed its fins while exposing its full side to the mirror (Swain and Holtby 1989;Gonçalves-de-Freitas and Mariguela 2006;Way et al 2015).…”

“…The Muskellunge Esox masquinongy is an apex predator in the systems it occupies, with adult fish filling an important niche by consuming large prey items and facilitating top-down control of ecosystems (Glade 2021). Muskellunge are also popular with anglers (Fayram 2003) and are long-lived fish, with some individuals attaining ages upwards of 30 years (Casselman and Crossman 1986).…”

“…Multiple gears were used due to differences in physical habitat that led to limited success with gill nets in the wetland and electrofishing in the lake. Differences in gear selectivity are not expected to substantially impact diet sampling (Glade et al 2023;Pothoven et al 2017;Quist et al 2002;Selch et al 2019). Collected Walleye were euthanized via carbon dioxide-induced hypoxia and measured for total length (mm) and weight (g).…”

“…One of the most iconic and popular freshwater fish in North America is the muskellunge ( Esox masquinongy ; Fayram, 2003; Glade, 2021). This top predator occupies lakes and streams in North America and is a target for anglers year‐round (Fayram, 2003).…”
