Diet and Kidney Function: a Literature Review

Abstract: Purpose of Review The burden of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is increasing worldwide. For CKD prevention, it is important to gain insight in commonly consumed foods and beverages in relation to kidney function. Recent Findings We included 21 papers of prospective cohort studies with 3-24 years of follow-up. We focused on meat, fish, dairy, vegetables, fruit, coffee, tea, soft drinks, and dietary patterns. There was convincing evidence that a healthy dietary pattern may lower CKD risk. Plant-based foods, coffee… Show more

“…Interestingly, we observed higher plasma lithium concentrations with higher tea consumption, although tea contains rather low amounts of lithium [ 55 ]. Tea, e.g., green tea, is known to exhibit, e.g., antioxidant, anti-inflammatory or metal chelating properties, and isolated compounds have convincingly been shown to beneficially affect kidney function in humans [ 65 ]. Thus, possible beneficial effects of dietary tea consumption on renal function are also conceivable, but warrant confirmation in large human trials [ 66 , 67 , 68 , 69 ].…”

“…Evidence supports the positive effects of plant-based dietary patterns when compared with the meat-based Western diets with regards to kidney function. 3,4,5 High intake of meat is positively associated with albuminuria, 6 and production of nitrogen products requiring elimination by the kidneys. In contrast, consumption of fruits and vegetables is inversely associated with albuminuria.…”
