Diet and exercise in the management of obstructive sleep apnoea and cardiovascular disease risk

Abstract: Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) morbidity and mortality. It is accepted that OSA and obesity commonly coexist. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends dietary-induced weight loss and exercise as lifestyle treatment options for OSA. However, most clinical trials upon which this recommendation is based have focused on establishing the effectiveness of calorie-restricted, often low-fat diets for improving OSA severity, whereas less attention has b… Show more

“…Finally the house con nement imposed by quarantine could be associated to the decreased intake of fresh food, as fruit, vegetables and sh, all food rich in vitamins (including vitamin C, beta-carotene, and vitamin D), minerals (including selenium and zinc) and omega 3 fatty acids with anti-in ammatory and antioxidants activities. The low consumption of these micronutrients is associated with both obesity and sleep disturbance [54][55][56]; in particular, vitamin D plays a key role in the relationship between obesity and sleep disturbances [57][58][59][60].…”

“…It is clear that future studies are needed to better understand this relationship [24]. According to these findings, one of the most important interventions in the treatment of OSA is the nutrition program, implemented to obtain weight loss in order to reduce the apnea-hypopnea index and the severity of OSA and, inselected cases with associated craniofacial deformities, early orthodontic treatment could be beneficial [25][26][27].…”

“…In agreement, an increase in blood pressure during aerobic exercise was reported previously (PALATINE et al, 1998). Exercise induces a great number of beneficial physiological responses namely for people suffering from cardiovascular disease (DOS SANTOS et al, 2015;DOBROSIELSKI et al, 2017;RIBEIRO et al, 2016). The increase in BP is, however, an unwanted response for people with hypertension therefore a short session of sauna prior aerobic exercise might help to control BP during exercise.…”
