Diene condensation on zeolites, II. Influence of the zeolite structure and the nature of substituting cation on the reaction of alloocimene with α-methacrolein

Abstract: The interaction of aUoocimene with ct-methacrolein on 13-zeolite with various substituent cations (Fe, Ni, Zn, Cu and La) as well as on ZSM-5, erionite and mordenite has been studied at room temperature in dichloromethane. Substituent cations in 13-zeolite as well as the silica/alumina ratio and alkali metal content in the zeolite structure were found to affect the formation of ocinal diastereomers. Therefore, we assume that a complex of active sites participates in the diene condensation: Alkali metals presen… Show more

“…290 The β-zeolite-catalysed reaction of α-methacrolein with alloocimene 85 leads to both [4 ϩ 2] and [3 ϩ 2] cycloaddition products, 291 and the [3 ϩ 2] products can be made to predominate when alkali metal ions are present. 292 High concentrations of citronellyl diphosphate 86 and of citronellyl-β--glucoside 87, both of which are precursors of rose oxide, have been detected in Pelargonium graveolens. 293 (Ϫ)-Citronellol 88 has been converted 294 into methyl secolonitoside 89.…”
