Dielectric fundamental strings in matrix string theory

Abstract: Matrix string theory is equivalent to type IIA superstring theory in the light-cone gauge, together with extra degrees of freedom representing D-brane states. It is therefore the appropriate framework in which to study systems of multiple fundamental strings expanding into higher-dimensional D-branes. Starting from Matrix theory in a weakly curved background, we construct the linear couplings of closed string fields to type IIA Matrix strings. As a check, we show that at weak coupling the resulting action repr… Show more

“…This is expected and it has been shown through matrix theory techniques that the F-string would indeed blow up in such a background [35,36] (see also [37]). Presumably the (p, q) string obtained in this paper would blow up in a D3-brane with both magnetic flux and electric flux.…”

“…In particular, the non-Abelian worldvolume scalar associated to D0-branes ending on the Type IIA waves is mapped under T-duality into a non-Abelian vector field which is now associated to D1-branes ending on the system of fundamental strings. One can check at the linearised level (see [25]) that the field strength of this vector field appears in the action for the F-strings exactly as predicted by S-duality. Using the action (3.19) to describe n 2 F-strings in the AdS 5 × S 5 background is now straightforward.…”

“…The idea in [29,25] is that since Matrix String theory describes string states with fixed light cone momentum, it could, in some limit, effectively describe gravitons. Explicitly, Matrix String theory is constructed by compactifying M-theory on the 9th direction, and then performing the 9-11 flip [16].…”
