Dielectric and tensile behavior of nanoclay reinforced polyetherimide nanocomposites

Abstract: Polyetherimide (PEI)/organoclay (Cloisite 30B) nanocomposite and PEI/pristine nanoclay (K10) nanocomposite were made by solution casting process. Nanoclay content of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0% (by weight) was reinforced in PEI. The dielectric properties (dielectric constant, loss tangent, and electromagnetic transmission/ reflection losses) of PEI/Cloisite 30B were observed lower than PEI/K10 in X band frequency (8 to 12 GHz). Mixed morphology in terms of intercalation and exfoliation was evident in wide-angle X-… Show more

“…With 5 wt. % fraction of polyaniline-clay nanocomposite prepared using 3-pentadecyl phenol 4-sulphonic acid (PANICN-PDPSA) and polyaniline-clay nanocomposite prepared using dodecyl benzene sulfonic acid (PANICN-DBSA) conductivity increased to 8.03 x 10 -3 S/m and 8.72 x 10 -3 S/m respectively, similar trends can be seen in papers [7,32]. SEM images shown in Figure 3 demonstrate the formation of interconnected conductive networks in the presence of nanoclay in such nanocomposites at a very low filler concentration and the desired value of electrical conductivity in the range of 10 -1 S/m is shown to be achieved with 5 wt.…”

“…Here, the filler loading is typically made of conducting polymer reinforced with nanoclays. The presence of nanoclays in this matrix is found to provide enhancements to the properties of the EMI shield films [7,11]. These are usually studied using the following tests that are shown in Table 2.…”
