Hagfish Eptatretus burgeri is classified as a agnathans and has many different physiological properties compared with vertebrates. In this study, we examined effects of water temperature and salinity on blood properties and oxygen consumption in hagfish. In the experiment of water temperature change, hematocrit (Ht), red blood cell (RBC) and glucose of hagfish blood revealed the lowest values at 15. Oxygen ℃ consumption of hagfish had significantly increased with rising water temperature, and the increasing rate was twice as much when the temperature was manipulated every 5. Also, oxygen consumption during ℃ the night time (a short photoperiod) was significantly higher than that of the daytime. Q10 level was 3.50 in the light period and 3.92 in the dark period. No significant change in plasma glucose level was showned in changing salinity from 30 psu to 22 psu, while it had rapidly increased at 20 psu (13.7±4.0 mg/dL) and thereafter all hagfish were dead at 18 psu. However, osmolarity, Na+, K+ and Cl-levels had significantly decreased when salinity decreased. This results are expected to develop the artificial rearing techniques of natural hagfish.

ABSTRAKLaju respirasi hewan akuatik memiliki hubungan yang erat dengan metabolisme. Tingkat metabolisme hewan merupakan variabel yang dapat dipengaruhi faktor dalam maupun luar, salah satunya adalah suhu. Pada ikan, proses metabolisme juga berkorelasi dengan suhu. Salah satu jenis ikan yang perlu dikaji laju respirasinya adalah ikan blackhead seabream Acanthopagrus schlegelii yang merupakan spesies ikan laut yang popular di Korea Selatan, sehingga diperlukan lebih banyak informasi lagi mengenai laju respirasi ikan ini untuk mengoptimalkan metabolisme ikan ini dan berdampak kepada produktivitas budidaya. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi laju respirasi induk ikan blackhead seabream pada beberapa tingkatan suhu. Ikan blackhead seabream (panjang total 29,3 ± 2,2 cm dan bobot tubuh 538,3 ± 43,0 g) diteliti menggunakan respirometer dalam sistem resirkulasi. Tiga kelompok percobaan dilakukan untuk mengukur laju respirasi berdasarkan perubahan suhu pemeliharaan (15°C, 20°C, dan 25°C). Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kecenderungan laju respirasi meningkat secara linier dengan peningkatan suhu perlakuan, dengan nilai tertinggi sebesar 164,8 ± 30,7 mg O 2 /kg/jam pada 25°C dan nilai terendah sebesar 72,4 ± 8,1 mg O 2 /kg/jam pada 15°C. Sementara itu, frekuensi pernapasan berkorelasi positif terhadap kenaikan suhu. Berdasarkan penelitian ini, dapat disimpulkan bahwa perubahan suhu dari 15°C ke 25°C menyebabkan peningkatan laju respirasi pada induk ikan blackhead seabream.

Changes of oxygen consumption in juvenile giant grouper, Epinephelus lanceolatus were investigated in order to find out the physiological responses associated with freshwater and low salinities acclimation. Salinity changes in this experiment were set as follows; 35 psu (Exp.) as control, decrease in the Ⅰ manners of 35 20 10 0 psu (Exp. ), 35 10 0 psu (Exp. ) and 35 0 psu (Exp. ). The average → → → Ⅱ → → Ⅲ→ Ⅳ oxygen consumption at 27 in Exp.(control) was 106.9±0.7 mg ℃ Ⅰ   /kg/h. In Exp. , according to the Ⅱ changes of 35 20 10 0 psu in freshwater acclimation, fish showed the gradual decrease in oxygen → → → consumption as 108.1±2.1, 99.6±2.9, 74.6±0.9 and 62.7±1.0 mg   /kg/h, respectively. The fish in Exp. Ⅲalso revealed the same tendency as 106.5±1.3, 77.0±1.2 and 64.7±1.2 mg   /kg/h, respectively. In Exp. , Ⅳ fish showed the decreased oxygen consumption from 109.0±0.9 mg   /kg/h of 35 psu to 71.6±2.0 mg   /kg/h of 0 psu. Giant grouper is thought to be a diurnal fish species, because the level of oxygen consumption during light period was higher than that during dark period.
