Dieser Beitrag befaßt sich mit den Unsicherheiten des Begriffs "Magische Schwertperlen" nach J. Werner (1956). Dieser ging davon aus, daß es sich dabei um eine ursprünglich iranische Sitte aus den östlichen Steppengebieten Rußlands handelt, die von den Sarmaten des 1. Jahrhunderts v. Chr. -2. Jahrhunderts n. Chr. geübt wurde und mit der Beigabe von Glasperlen am Schwertgriff in Kriegergräbern ihren Ausdruck fand. Von elf von A.M. Chazanov (1971) aufgeführten Ringgriffdolchen und -schwertern hatten mindestens sieben eine solche Glasperle am Griffende oder dicht am Schwert. Befunde aus spätsarmatischen Kriegergräbern wie dem von Kobjakovo am Don belegen, daß Perlen als mutmaßliche Schwertanhänger im 2.-3. Jahrhundert aktuell waren. Die großen Einzelperlen aus dieser Kategorie waren in aller Regel aber aus Halbedelsteinen und nicht aus Glas gefertigt. Werner (1956) registriert einen Entwicklungsschub bei dieser Fundgruppe im 5. Jahrhundert in hunnischer Zeit. Möglicherweise ist die Folge ein Bedeutungsverlust für die Schwertperle, die so als Anhängeperle zu einem Schmuckgegenstand wird, als Emblem dient oder als Teil eines Beigabenensembles von Perlen aller Art. Auch wenn die Bezeichnung "magisch" nicht überall Anklang gefunden hat, ist die rituelle Bedeutung von Edelstein-und Halbedelsteinperlen eine traditionell gewachsene Überlieferung aus der Antiken Welt. Die Wahl bestimmter Perlen in den Schwertgräbern bei Sarmaten, Alanen und Abchasen wie Chalzedon, Bernstein und Bergkristall dürfte sich mit den Verbindungen zum Mittelmeerraum erklären. Perlen aus Glas, die ein Kunstprodukt sind, haben in dieser Reihe keinen Platz, auch wenn sie zum Teil als Amulett gehandelt werden. Werners "Magische Schwertperle" hat viele Erscheinungsformen -und der Mythos von einem Schutzstein für den Krieger hat sich über die Zeiten hinweg gehalten.Cette étude traite de l'ambiguïté du terme de "Magische Schwertperlen" -"perles d'épée magiques" -selon J. Celui-ci y voyait un usage d'origine iranienne provenant des steppes de la Russie orientale, et pratiqué par les Sarmates entre le 1 er siècle avant et le 2 e siècle de notre ère: l'usage de placer des perles de verre au manche des épées dans les tombes de guerriers. Des onze poignards ou épées à pommeau annulaire nommés par A. Chazanov (1971), au moins sept portaient une perle de verre au bout de la poignée ou près de la lame. Des fouilles dans des tombes plus récentes de guerriers sarmates, comme celles de Kobjakovo sur le Don, montrent que les perles, servant probablement de pendentifs d'épées, étaient à la mode aux 2 e et 3 e siècles. Cependant, les grandes perles de cette catégorie étaient faites généralement en pierre fine et non en verre. Werner (1956) constate un essor de ce type d'objet au 5 e siècle à l'époque des Huns.
