The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a profound impact on the mental health and well-being of adolescents. This study aimed to investigate the development of health-related quality of life (HRQoL) and mental health among adolescents in Northern Italy by comparing cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2021 and 2022, with a particular focus on the influence of age and gender. The sample included adolescents aged 11–19 years from public schools in South Tyrol. Validated psychometric instruments were used to assess HRQoL, anxiety and depression symptoms, and psychosomatic complaints. Sociodemographic variables, COVID-19 burden, and pandemic-related factors were measured. Statistical analyses included chi-square tests, correlation coefficients, and logistic regression analyses. The results indicated that while the self-reported burden of adolescents decreased significantly in 2022 (n = 1885) compared to 2021 (n = 1760), there were no significant differences in symptoms of anxiety, depressive symptoms, low HRQoL, and increased psychosomatic complaints between the two surveys for both early and late adolescents. Females consistently had higher percentages for all outcome variables, and symptoms of anxiety increased with age in females, but not in males. Both genders experienced an increase in depressive symptoms and low HRQoL with age. The co-occurrence of mental health outcomes was observed, suggesting overlapping patterns among anxiety, depression, low HRQoL, and psychosomatic complaints. These findings underscore the intricate relationship between age, gender, and mental health outcomes among adolescents during the pandemic. It is important to recognize that late adolescents may exhibit distinct vulnerabilities and may require tailored support approaches to address their specific mental health challenges, differing from those needed for early adolescents.

Chronic disease in a child, with the associated hospital stays, places considerable demands on the child and their family. The aim of this study was to investigate the parents’ perceptions of the music therapy used with their child during a hospital stay and to determine whether they felt that it reduced the child’s anxiety and stress generated by hospital admission. We hypothesized that the use of live music therapy from a music therapist would positively support these patients in everyday clinical practice, promote their wellbeing, and have positive impacts on their vital signs and blood pressure. Children with chronic gastroenterological and nephrological diseases included in this prospective study received live music therapy with a median duration of 41 min (range from 12 to 70 min) two to four times per week until discharged from the hospital. At the time of discharge, the parents were asked to complete a Likert-style questionnaire to evaluate the music therapy. Seven items were related to general questions about the patients and sessions, and eleven items evaluated the personal perceptions of the parents. Music therapy was conducted in 83 children, with a median age of 3 years (range from 1 month to 18 years). All parents (100%) completed the questionnaire at the time of discharge. Seventy-nine percent of the parents stated that their children were able to enjoy the music therapy sessions without being stressed. In addition, 98% of the respondents said that they were grateful for the music therapy their children received (97% fully agreed and 1% rather agreed). All parents considered music therapy to be beneficial for their child. The parents’ responses reflected the view that music therapy is beneficial to patients. According to the parents, music therapy can be integrated effectively in the inpatient clinical setting and can support children with chronic illnesses during their hospital stay.

Hintergrund In vielen kinder- und jugendpsychiatrischen Versorgungskliniken in Deutschland herrscht bereits jetzt ein Mangel an Ärztinnen und Ärzten, der eine qualitativ hochwertige stationäre kinder- und jugendpsychiatrische Flächenversorgung als zukünftig kaum noch realisierbar erscheinen lässt. Methoden Der Diskussionsbeitrag stellt zunächst anhand aktueller Daten den gegenwärtigen Stand der stationären kinder- und jugendpsychiatrischen Versorgungsstruktur in Deutschland dar. Im Anschluss werden verschiedene Handlungsoptionen zum Umgang mit der Problematik des Ärztemangels in unserem Fachgebiet vorgestellt und mit ihren jeweiligen Vor- und Nachteilen diskutiert. Ergebnisse Als Handlungsoptionen werden vorgeschlagen: Reduktion der Versorgung in der Fläche, Reduktion personalaufwändiger stationärer Bettenkapazitäten zugunsten aufsuchender Versorgungsformen, sektorenübergreifende Kooperation unter Einsatz telemedizinischer Behandlungsformen, Übertragung von Verantwortung an psychologische Kollegen, Konzentration stationsärztlicher Tätigkeiten auf somatisch-medizinische Aufgaben, Verbesserung der Arbeitsbedingungen in den Kliniken, Gewinnung von Fachärzten aus dem Ausland sowie Intensivierung der Rekrutierungsbemühungen im Kontext des Medizinstudiums. Die letztgenannte Maßnahme bietet nach Ansicht der Autoren die größte Chance auf nachhaltigen Erfolg, bedarf allerdings einer auf Dauer angelegten Strategie sowie eines hohen, flächendeckenden Engagements.
